GARDEN CLUB OF HARWICH
GENERAL MEETING April 1, 2008

 Return to Minutes

President Margaret Otis called the meeting to order at 1:30 .  Jo Molnar led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary’s Report:  Corrected to read “two $2000 scholarships” and filed.

Treasurer’s Report:  Accepted and filed.

Corresponding Secretary:  Carole Davis reported that a sympathy card and plant were sent to Mary Ann Janick whose husband passed away.  A thinking of you card was sent to Rita Hauck and a card will be sent to Marty Heseltine who is home after surgery.

Membership:  Joan Bittrich reported that 89 members, 6 associate members, 1 lifetime member and 3 guests are present.  There are applications available for openings in the Club.  New members will be accepted in June.

Fashion Show:   Over 100 reservations have been received for the Fashion Show Luncheon in May.  Members are urged to respond since seating is limited.

Design Workshop:  Lynn Drummond reported that there are three openings for May 8.

Civic Beautification:  Irene Mitchell reported that the overview at Wychmere Harbor will be beautiful this summer.  Cranberry Valley Golf Club is also a new garden project overseen by Margaret Otis.  The club is re-doing the entrance to Brooks Park with the help of Cape Cod Tech.

Horticulture:  Elaine Sampson said the workshop at Small Gardens on May 5 is full but encouraged members to sign up on the wait list since there are often cancellations.

Conservation Trust:  Geri Schurmann reminded us of the dinner and walks sponsored by the Harwich Conservation Trust.  Their number is 508-432-3997.  On April 4 at 10:00 there will be a walk at the Bank Street Bog; on May 15 at 9:00 will be an Isabel Smith Monomoy River Conservation Land walk.  See Jane Molyneux for details.

What’s Next:  Margaret reminded members that we would be sharing bus strips with other garden clubs. The Brewster Garden Club is having a bus trip to the Garden in the Woods on May 15.  See Margaret for details. Also, the Nauset Garden Club is having a Flower Show at the Crosby Mansion in Brewster on June 13 from 1:00 to 5:00 . Ruth Alberding has the tickets for those who signed up for the Harwich Women’s Club Luncheon and Fashion Show on May 8.

Plant Sale :  Geri Schurmann reported that most positions have been filled for the plant sale but white elephants and baked goods are needed; deliver baked goods the morning of the sale. Please deliver annuals to Geri’s house May 5, 6, or 7th. Good sources for unusual plants are Roots & Roses at Cape Cod Tech and the Correctional Farm in Barnstable (508-375-6520 for hours.) She encouraged members to sell raffle tickets to people outside of the Club; it’s a good way of advertising.

House Tour:  Joan Garrity suggested that the Historic House and Garden Tour, concluded with a tea at Brooks Academy, be scheduled for June 2009 to more adequately plan for its success.

Program:  Jeanne Tassinari encouraged members and their guests to sign up for the Bus Trip June 4.  She reminded members to leave suggestions for next year’s programs in the Suggestion Box.  A rug donated by Claire Murray is being raffled off (chances one for $5, three for $10) with the winner being drawn at the Fashion Show.  She thanked all who participated in Art in Bloom and announced the winners:  Third Place (tie) Elaine Gray and Ruth Alberding as well as Lynne Drummond and Laurel Provost.  Second Place Kathy Dillon.  First Place Nancy MacLeod.
