GENERAL MEETING OCTOBER 6, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 by President Jeanne Tassinari.  

Jeanne thanked Joan Garrity for co-chairing the June Historic House and Garden Tour with the Harwich Historical Society.  The event raise $5200 which we split with the Historic Society.   She also thanked Garden Club members, Dottie Mille and Karen Helliwell, for opening their homes.  She thanked the volunteers who worked as docents, baked and did floral arrangements.  

Jeanne thanked members for the donations to the Family Panty and homeless and reminded us to bring in items for the Baby Center next month.  

The Secretary’s report and the Treasurer’s report (attached) had been emailed to everyone with email.  Copies were available at the sign in station for those without email.  There were no changes so both reports were accepted for file.  

Corresponding Secretary’s Report presented by Sharon Oudemool for Carrie Wailgum:  A get-well card was sent to Joan Garrity who is recuperating from knee surgery.  A sympathy card was sent to Mrs. Dominic Campanella of the Willow Tree Inn on the death of her husband. A sympathy card was sent to Sallyjane Rivard on the death of her sister. A thank you card from Harwich Historical Society was received. Sharon read a thank you note from the Brooks Free Library for the Blooming Barrels at the entrance to the Library and for the Garden Club’s many efforts throughout the town.  

Program Committee Chair Lynne Drummond reviewed the programs for October and November.  Flyers for the Christmas lunch are available.  This will be held at the West Dennis Yacht Club on Tuesday, December 8.  A Yankee swap will be held at each table.  

Horticulture Chair Pat Tworek announced a field trip on October 22 to the gardens of Fred Allen, a member of the American Hosta Association.  An email will be sent out with details.  

Civic Beautification Co-Chair Irene Mitchell said that Dotty Miller and Bev Millar were organizing a major clean-up of Thompson’s Field this coming Friday.  A clip board was circulating for much needed helpers.  The Our family has opened All Points Home Center in West Dennis.  They are offering a 15% discount to Garden Club members.  

Design Workshop of October 8 has been cancelled because Doris Casy has the flu.  There is a correction to page 12 of the Booklet.  The January workshop has been changed to Wednesday, January 13.  

There are openings for two table at the  Bridge Luncheon on October 8.  More waitresses are also needed.  

Daffodil Bulb Co-Chair Nancy Atkinson said that bulbs will be sold at Brooks Academy  this Saturday, October 10.  They are 24 for $12.  Those that have already purchased bulbs can pick them up at Nancy ’s house on October 7 from 9:30 on or on October 9 from 9:30 – 11;30 or call Nancy to arrange another time.  

Ways and Means will also be selling items at Brooks Academy on October 10.  They took in $164.25 at Brooks Academy on September 26 and $111.50 at our last meeting.  

Conservation Chair Sue Mills announced that a program called “Mission Wolf” will be presented at the Community Center on October 20 at 5 and 7 pm.  Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.  A wine tasting to benefit the Harwich Conservation Trust will be held on November 18 at the Port.  Cost is $50 per person.  Gerie Schumann also spoke about conservation as a member of the Trails committee.  Anyone interested in walking the trails can help out by cleaning up and monitoring the trails for damage.  All are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, October 13 at the Conservation Office.  

Christmas Boutique Chair Gerie Schumann announced that sign up sheets are being circulated for the event to be held on Friday, December 4 in conjunction with the Harwich Christmas Stroll.  Help is needed for set up, clean up, selling at the sale and baking.  A handout is available on cutting and preparing greens for making centerpieces.  Save any green trimmings by moistening and storing in a cool place outdoors.  Two workshops will be help on glass painting (Oct 22 and Oct 30).  It looks like we will be able to use the Village Center space again.  

Membership Chair Sue Hart introduced member-in-waiting, Helen Beard and presented a plant to new member, Juell Buckwald.  There were 126 members and 5 guests at the meeting.  

Jeanne announced that we made a donation  to the Harwich High School Friends of the Arts of bulbs, garden gloves and a trake for their fund raising auction to be held on October 30.  The Association to Preserve Cape Cod will meet at CC Community College on Wednesday at 6 pm.  The Nauset Garden Club is doing Christmas at Crosby mansion on November 6-8.  Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Following adjournment Lynne Drummond introduced the program, “Five Sisters from Lavender Lane.”  Four of the five sisters were present including Mary Reynolds from our own club.  They presented an interesting, informative and humorous program.  A raffle was held for a basket of their products.
