GENERAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 1, 2009

Prior to the meeting a Horticultural Event (as detailed in the September, 2009 Newsletter) was held and judged by Doris Casey and Pat Tworek.  The next Horticultural Event will be in January, 2010.

 The meeting was called to order at 1:07 by President Jeanne Tassinari.

 Jeanne thanked Tea Chairs Nancy Jones and Kathy Willet for the delicious lunch.  She also thanked Irene Mitchell and Aileen Demeusy and their committees for the work done throughout the Harwiches in spring and summer for Civic Beautification.

 Program Chair Lynne Drummond reviewed the programs for September and October.

 Recording Secretary Mary Ann Wall read the minutes of the June 2, 2009 meeting.  They were accepted and filed.

 Corresponding Secretary Carrie Wailgum listed the cards and letters she had sent and received since June. 

Correspondence sent:  get well card  to Helen Pekenia, sympathy card to Marcia Bearse on the death of her mother, sympathy card to Helen Pekenia on the loss of her husband, get well card to Pat Rogers, sympathy card to the family of member Betty Hayes on her passing, get well card  to June Svenningsen,  thank you note to Tom Birch of Birch Landscaping for all his help with the landscaping at Brooks Academy.

Correspondence received:  thank you note from Helen Pekenia for flowers, thank you note from scholarship recipient Corey Farrenkopf.

The Treasurer’s Report for June, 2009 and the Budget for 2009-2010 had been emailed to all members.  Jeanne asked for comments and lacking any they were accepted and filed.  (Copies attached).

Chamber of Commerce Liaison Glee Jansen reviewed the “Fall for Harwich” flyer and calendar.  Events are scheduled from September 10 – October 12.  The Garden Club will participate on Brooks Academy Day, September 26 and October 10.

Glee asked for help in refurbishing the pole wreaths.  Workshops will be held on September 29 and October 1 from 10:30-noon in the basement of the Chamber of Commerce building.  Bring garden gloves and wire cutters.  Glee’s husband, Hank, will be putting up and taking down the wreaths with the help of the Harwich High School basketball team but he could use some additional assistance.

Civic Beautification Co-Chair Irene Mitchell thanked all those who worked on the various locations this year.  She presented a small gift to those who have done this for years and are retiring.  Co-Chair Aileen Demeusy presented awards for the best residential summer garden to Jean Eddy at 33 Pleasant Road and best garden of a commercial enterprise to Debra and Scott Rogers, Cape Cod Computer – C4.net, 721 Main Street , Harwich Center .

Design Workshop Chair Doris Casey said that there where still openings for the October 8 workshop on seasonal fall design.

In the absence of Scholarship Chair Pearl Fournier, Jeanne announced that scholarships have been awarded to Corey Farrenkopf for $2000 (Marine biology) and to Clifton Hewitt for $3000 (Environmental Engineering).  Three $200 toolships from Cape Coastal Nursery in South Dennis have been awarded to Brianna Raneo, Shealyn Devine and Nicholas Maynard.

Bridge Luncheon Co-Chair Ann Lawson spoke about the event to be held on October 8 at Allen Harbor Yacht Club.  A lobster salad lunch will be served and a raffle will be held.

Co-Chairs Laurel Ferry and Nancy Atkinson will be selling daffodils to the public on September 25-26 at Stop and Shop, CVS, Shaw’s and the Harwich Post Office.  The will also be selling them at Brooks Academy on September 26 and October 10 (correction to Book)

Christmas Boutique Chair Gerie Schumann announced that sign up sheets are being circulated for the event to be held on Friday, December 4 in conjunction with the Harwich Christmas Stroll.

Jeanne thanked Judi Palleschi for doing the Booklet and Peg Erdlen for doing the Newsletter.

Membership Chair Sue Hart announced that Mavis Wiard has become a lifetime member.  She introduced new members Nancy Woods, Beth Savage, Carol O’Leary, Shirley Knowles, and Lydia Bell.  Each was presented with a plant.

Jeanne announced that the Scholarship Committee will present a proposal to the Executive Board to increase the amount of the Scholarships.

The meeting adjourned at 1:50 pm.
